to dana bash, monitoring developments on capitol hill and dana, while the talks are at a standstill, i can see these trying to talk us to, not sure how this will go. let's try any watch the vn now primarily a part of the negotiations, how did that happen and i can see -- dana, can you hear me all right? >> reporter: yes, i can. sorry about that >> so i was just saying, the vice president now has been called in as part of these negotiations is that inspiration or desperation at this point? >> reporter: um, i would think it's an inspiration but we will have to see. you know, what's going on here appears to be that senator reid, the democratic leader is playing bad cop and joe biden is playing good cop. he certainly has a long history of talks and bipartisan negotiations with mitch mcconnell. i want to, over the past hour, we have spoken to two republican senators, i wanted to talk to claire mccaskill, thanks very much for joining us, they just ended their almost two-hour meeting, martin, two hours, what was going on in there behind those door? >> i know you will be shocked to hear that a lot

should try checking in with dana bash. she will have the first word on that. >> let's go to dana bash right now. first of all, the reaction to the president's remarks. we heard some biting criticism that the president was inappropriate in saying what he said at this sensitive moment. >> reporter: that's right. i'll get to that in one second. to answer your question, we don't know yet about the senate, but we do have a little bit of news that jessica alluded to, and that is the house will break tonight. we reported earlier this is likely. now it's official. the house will break tonight, new year's eve, december 31st, the night of the fiscal cliff, without voting on the fiscal cliff package. they're going to likely come in, if there's something to vote on tomorrow, and vote on it then. this is a procedural reason because they just don't have anything to vote on. it's also politically advantageous because house republicans and democrats are now going to be able to vote on effectively a tax cut, not a tax increase, because taxes go up january 1st. i think the best way to answer is by tell

. chief white house correspondent, jessica yellin, and senior congressional correspondent, dana bash. jessica, first, to you, the president's back in washington, wheels down. he left his christmas vacation early. but was this just a bit of showmanship, or has he been working on something specific? >> reporter: hey, john. well, today has been a bit of a quiet day here at the white house. publicly, the president has been scarce, no sign of him. behind closed doors, i'm told a few meetings internally, but mostly, relatively quiet. i expect we will see more from the president, perhaps we could even see him publicly tomorrow. perhaps he could even meet with or talk to some of the congressional leaders. the president's role in all of this, he can get each of the leaders to come closer on what the white house believes is already, pretty clearly, the framework for a final deal, and he can also go out and lobby the american people to pressure congress to get something done. again, the democrats are insistent that they have been clear on the outlines of what a deal would look like, to raise ta

is telling us no, that is not the case. i got jessica yellen standing by and we have dana barb who is standing by and they are there on capitol hill. what is the mix up between sending a plan and not sending a plan by the president? >> hi, john. the bottom line is both sides want to take action and before senat senator mcconnell decides whether to filibuster the measure and whether the other republicans in the party will filibuster, they have to see the details in the proposal. will there be an estate tax provision? how will unemployment which is expected to be extended? will it be paid for? what spending measures will be in this and spending cuts, etc. there will be more details spelled out and where will that come from? will it come from a phone call and staff here at the white house and spelled out by the staff of the senate majority leader harry reid. all that was is yet to be determined. perhaps senator connell's office believes it will come from different sources and there is a lot of potential for confusion with such little time left and so much pressure on the line. dana mi

shopping. shoppers hit the stores for the last time before christmas today. dana telsey is the ceo and chief officer of telsey group. we saw you day after thanksgiving, you said there was going to be sort of a hot -- that weekend was going to be big, there was going to be a lull, and it was all going to come back. has it turned out that way for you, dana? >> i think some of it came back. i don't think all of it came back. i think it was a tougher season than expected. you think you had the long calendar, the hurricane sandy, the track dpi in connecticut, people had a lot on their minds this season. this weekend was a key weekend. i think it helped. i didn't see promotions being extra promotional. but it's a push till the end. >> okay, so winners and losers? >> i think some of the winners, i think you're going to see companies like tjx, macy's. i think american eagle outfitters, even gap had a very good season, along with michael kors. >> losers? >> i think you had a tough time at jcpenney. i think the traffic was tough there all the time. i think kohl's had to be extra promotional

of digging tonight for cnn's dana bash. i know we don't have any decisions out of the call but do question have a sense what republicans are telling speaker boehner? how likely are we to see a vote in time to avoid going of the cliff? >> it is in part the reason why house republicans didn't make a decision to bring the house back or when to do it. the ball is in the senate's courts especially with senate democrats. that has changed big time since a few weeks ago. at this point what they are trying to figure out is whether or not they can find enough republicans to cross party lines for what the president proposed right before he left for hawaii which is a scaled-back bill focusing on tax cuts and on what he campaigned on which is only keeping the cuts in place for those making over $250,000. is it a big ask to get ten senate republicans to get them to cross over. >> so what more do we know then. it is still being crafted and that is part of the dance that's being done in these next few days which is exactly what do democrats have to put into this in order to lure those republicans if anyth
